![]() ![]() The sound is another plus factor, with a wide range of shooty gun noises, monster screams, squelches as they fall to bits and a pumping heavy metal soundtrack that all combine to take me right back to the glory days of those FPS games. In fact, the insane amount of blood and dismemberment makes Prodeus more fun than something that is very fun indeed. It’s helped that the enemies pixelate when you get close to them, and there’s sheer joy in the way they come apart when you hit them with a shotgun blast. The way the game looks just screams retro 90’s boomer shooter, but it all moves at a very smooth, slick pace that belies the simple graphics. It’s a fun time that can be finished in a few sittings or over the weekend if you’re looking for a stylish fun shooter that feels both old and new.It looks good though and the visual quality of Prodeus will take gamers of my vintage all the way back to DOOM on the PC, back when the world was young. The game is definitely a bit derivative, there is no denying that, but the overall package works. Prodeus was a blast from start to finish with only a few levels and moments not working for me. I’m not much of a creator of maps myself, but it’s fun to see what other people have come up with overtime. The game also features a robust level creator. This is sad to see for a game that only just hit 1.0 and released back in September of 2022. The multiplayer though is a little dead, with searching for matches taking quite a while. The game also features multiplayer that can be played with friends or random people online. Prodeus nailed the feel of firing it and enemies exploding into a red paste never tires. The shotgun is a personal favorite of mine. Some of the weapons fall a little flat, but most have their place. The super shot gun fire single shots, but with the press of L2, it will fire the entire clip, up to the 4 rounds it carries. The pistol can fire single shots, but the alt fire gives it a 3-round burst fire instead. Weapons each have a unique feel as well as alternative firing modes when pressing a different button. The movement speed is insanely fast, and the game encourages movement during combat as much as possible. The standout highlight of Prodeus is the way the game actually feels and plays. The level design is straightforward if you’re just looking to play through a level normally, but if you’re in the mood for secrets, then Prodeus has you covered there too. Each level is filled to the brim with demons to murder as well as hidden paths and secrets to discover. The campaign is level based and runs for about 6-8 hours depending on difficulty and your own skill level. You get a bit of text on the onset of each level, but besides that, you’re off to the races. There is no introduction cut scene or much story to be had. Prodeus is a good mix of old-school shotting with some modern takes on the genre as well. Prodeus isn’t trying to shake the foundation, but the foundation itself is as solid as they come. Prodeus is the classic example of a modern day take on Doom and boomer shooters alike. A boomer shooter refers to a retro-style first-person shooter in the style of the original Doom and games of that ilk. ![]() ![]() Over the past few years, “Boomer Shooters” have become a more popular term and genre for retro style games.
